Factors Affecting the Number of Cavities in an Injection Molding Mold

Do you know what factors affect the number of cavities in an injection molding mold? As far as I know, many aspects need to be considered, such as economy, technical requirements of injection molded parts, equipment, product accuracy of plastic injection molding, and demand.

1. The relationship between the size of the plastic injection molding and the equipment

When molding large or medium-sized plastic injection moldings, a single cavity is generally used. Considering the filling fluidity of the plastic, it is necessary to ensure that the plastic is filled with the cavity and the processing difficulty. Designing multiple cavities for forming molds for medium and small plastic parts can better utilize equipment and mold capabilities and improve production efficiency.

2. Depending on the production batch requirements of plastic injection moldings

When the production batch of plastic injection moldings is not large, to reduce the cost, a single cavity mold is often designed. When the production batch of plastic parts is large or large, the mold needs to achieve the ability to complete the corresponding task, and multiple cavities are often designed.

3. It is easier to meet the accuracy of plastic parts

When the precision of plastic injection moldings is not high, the control requirements for mold manufacturing and product forming process are also low. The number of cavities can be determined according to the capacity of the equipment. When the precision of the plastic injection molding is high, too many cavities will make it difficult to guarantee the product quality, the mold processing cost is too high, and the more the number of cavities, the worse the consistency of the control of the molding process conditions of each cavity.

4. Make full use of existing equipment

Priority should be given to using the company's production resources, such as molding equipment, to be more economical.

5. Do not complicate the mold structure

For plastic parts with complex shapes or high precision, sometimes to add a cavity, the mold structure will become much more complicated, and the mold manufacturing accuracy will also be improved a lot. Therefore, considering the number of cavities, we should pay attention to economic benefits, and avoid uneconomical ones.

6. Reduce mold manufacturing costs

To reduce the cost of the product, a certain limit is often imposed on the cost of the mold. For complex and precision injection molded parts, each additional cavity in the mold increases the processing cost a lot.
